Why is it so important to promote your business?

Do you sometimes sit in front of your screen and wonder how on Earth do I promote my business?

Trust me, I know the feeling.

Sometimes it feels easy to just stay comfortable and do the things we like in our business, right?

But actually if we’re not actively getting out there then our businesses will fail.

Don’t let that happen to you.

Actively explore new routes to attract new customers and promote your business however uncomfortable it feels.

So how do you promote and get your business out there

Here are 7 Ways to promote your business that worked well for my fashion start up.

  1. Pitch to Media

Pitching to Media seems scary to do but once you realise journalists need your content, it actually becomes fun.

Getting featured in the media is the fast track way to enhance your business’s credibility and get more sales. You also get to put the media logo on your website. That’s a big fat stamp of approval.

Promoting your business this way may take a lot of upfront effort but out of all the ways you could promote your business, this one has the best long-term effect.

Think about it – if you get featured in online media, it’s on the internet for life! The backlinks and traffic it directs to your website are powerful.

When I focused on this method for my business I managed to get my start up featured in 14 pieces of online press, including the Harvard Business Review.

It made a huge difference.

Here’s a freebie showing you exactly how I did it!

2. Speak at an event

Where do your ideal customers hang out? Look up events they go to and pitch to the organisers. Do you know how hard it can be to fill panels and speaker slots? You’re doing the event organiser favour and, most importantly, your business! You’ll be getting right in front of your audience. Hello Sales!

3. Be a case study for another business with a shared audience.

A lazy way to promote your business is to ride on the coat tails of another up and coming business you work with.  What does this mean?  Well if a business you work closely with is looking to promote their business and would benefit from case studies, testimonials, profile pieces, get involved! You’ll benefit from their coverage.

A few years ago I was a member of a women’s co-working group. They needed to showcase members to the press. I volunteered and was featured on their social media and included in a pitch as a case study to a national newspaper. It brought me a wave of new customers and sales.

4. Collaborate with other brands

Another way to promote your business is to join forces with another brand. You could run a competition together, contribute to their newsletter, do a joint webinar or insta live together, run an event together, launch joint content. It’s all about tapping into their audience and offering them something useful so that they join your email list.

5. Gift your products to influencers

One fun way to promote your business is via influencer marketing, especially if you have a high volume product business. It’s such a powerful way for you to tap into someone’s audience and generate sales.

The key thing here is to find the right influencer who shares your audience and values. Check out my detailed post on how to work with influencers and what worked for me and my business.

6. Be a thought leader

We often think that to promote a business we have to talk about a product or service. But remember: you are a brilliant entrepreneur with a unique story. No one else in the world has that story. Pitch your personal story to the media and raise your business’ profile.

7. Host an Event

Host or feature at an event for your target audience. It’s a brilliant way to attract the right types of customers to your service. Your audience can see you in person and hear your story and if it resonates, will even buy your product there and then.

Hosting an event doesn’t just promote your business, it’s a great networking opportunity too. This could open even more doors for you. I actually met an incredibly and famous tech entrepreneur this way. I had a stall at a pop up where we met and after a few coffees I told her I was really trying hard to get into the media. She then introduced me over email to the Editor of the Sunday Times and as a result, I pitched and got my business in this national newspaper and achieved 4 figure sales. So a simple pop up in this case led to some national media coverage!

What do you think of these 7 ways to promote your business? Have you used them?
